A new accessible boardwalk at Lisfannon Beach has officially opened, improving access to one of Inishowen’s most beautiful coastal locations.

The project marks an important milestone for the local community and will help make Lisfannon Beach more welcoming and accessible for everyone, including people with disabilities, older people, families with young children, and those with walking or mobility challenges.

The new boardwalk and dedicated wheelchair spaces provide a safer and more comfortable route towards the beach and surrounding viewpoints, enabling more people to enjoy time by the sea and experience the natural beauty of Lough Swilly.

In addition to improving accessibility, the boardwalk supports sustainable tourism by helping to protect the surrounding dunes and vegetation through managed access routes.

The official opening was attended by elected representatives, community organisations, local stakeholders and project partners, who gathered to celebrate the completion of a project that will bring lasting benefits to residents and visitors alike.

Projects like this demonstrate the importance of creating inclusive public spaces where everyone has the opportunity to connect with nature, enjoy the outdoors and experience the beauty of places like Lisfannon Beach.

The boardwalk was delivered through the Sláintecare Healthy Communities Programme – Seed Fund, supported by the Department of Health and administered locally by Donegal County Council on behalf of the Local Community Development Committee.

The official opening was attended by Oireachtas Members, Elected Members, Donegal County Council representatives, community organisations, local stakeholders and project partners, including Go Visit Inishowen, Buncrana Tidy Towns, Nazareth House, Donegal Independent Living, the Irish Wheelchair Association, Donegal Sports Partnership and the Independent Living Movement of Ireland.
