Amazing Grace & Lough Swilly

The world-famous hymn Amazing Grace began its remarkable journey on the wild shores of Lough Swilly, Inishowen.

On 10 March 1748, John Newton — a foul-mouthed sailor with a troubled past — was caught in a violent Atlantic storm. Stranded at sea and close to death, he was finally saved when the winds shifted on 8 April, allowing his ship to find safe haven in Lough Swilly.

Stepping ashore, Newton was a changed man, deeply convinced that God’s grace could save even a “wretch” like him.

Though he had previously served as captain of a slave ship, Newton’s faith eventually led him to abandon this profession. In 1764, he left the sea to join the clergy, dedicating his life to faith and service.

In 1773, while preparing a New Year’s Day sermon, Newton penned the words to Amazing Grace — a hymn that would go on to inspire millions worldwide.

Later, as an influential preacher in London, he became a prolific hymn writer and a key mentor to William Wilberforce, who led the historic campaign to abolish the Transatlantic Slave Trade.
