Donagh Cross

Standing sentinel near Carndonagh for over 1,400 years, the Donagh Cross (also known as St Patrick’s Cross) is one of Ireland’s finest examples of early medieval low-relief stone carving. Dating from the 7th century, the cross is carved from a single piece of hard, laminated sandstone, featuring short arms gently curving from the shaft.

Its decoration is distinctive, combining interlaced ribbon patterns with simplified low-relief figures. The central image is believed to depict either the Crucifixion or the Transfiguration, flanked by figures interpreted as Mary and John, the two thieves, or possibly soldiers, while angels are thought to accompany the crosshead. Below, three figures wearing cowls and long robes may represent the holy women who visited Christ’s tomb after the resurrection. Pillar stones on either side of the cross are richly decorated with additional biblical figures and scenes.

Originally located across the road, the cross now stands beside Donagh Church, preserving its prominence in the heart of Carndonagh and providing visitors with a direct connection to Ireland’s early Christian heritage.
