Father Hegarty’s Rock

Overlooking the shores of Lough Swilly near Buncrana, Father Hegarty’s Rock is one of Inishowen’s most poignant historic sites. It commemorates Father James Hegarty, a Catholic priest who is believed to have been the last priest executed in Ireland under the Penal Laws.

In the early 18th century, the Penal Laws severely restricted the practice of the Catholic faith. Priests who refused to swear an oath of allegiance to the Crown risked imprisonment or execution, while informers could claim a reward for their capture.

According to local history, Father James Hegarty attempted to escape across Lough Swilly by swimming to safety after the authorities were alerted to his whereabouts. He was persuaded to return to shore after being promised his life would be spared, but was immediately executed upon his return in 1709. He was buried close to the place where he died, and his grave can still be visited today.

Local folklore adds another layer to the story. It is said that Father Hegarty’s head struck the ground several times after his execution, leaving patches where grass has never grown. Visitors will also notice a natural crack in the rock, which many believe resembles the shape of a cross.

In April 2025, Donegal County Council unveiled a striking bronze sculpture of Father Hegarty, created by acclaimed local sculptor Rory Harron. The artwork stands beside the historic site, offering visitors a powerful tribute to Father Hegarty’s life and the enduring significance of religious freedom in Ireland.

Father Hegarty’s Rock is located along the scenic Buncrana Shore Path and is one of the highlights of this beautiful coastal walk. The site combines dramatic views across Lough Swilly with an important chapter of Irish history, making it a rewarding stop for walkers, history enthusiasts and anyone interested in Inishowen’s rich heritage.

The nearby sculpture, grave and interpretation panel help bring the story to life while the surrounding coastline offers excellent opportunities for photography and quiet reflection.

Directions

From the Explore Inishowen Tourist Office in Buncrana, head north for approximately 150 metres before turning left onto Aileach Road. Cross the public car park to join the Buncrana Shore Path and follow the path north for approximately 2.5 km (around 45 minutes). Father Hegarty’s Grave is located on the right-hand side of the path, with the rock overlooking Lough Swilly on the left.
