Swan Park, Buncrana

Swan Park Buncrana is a historic riverside park in the heart of Buncrana, Inishowen, offering scenic walks, public art, and a connection to local heritage. Named after Harry Swan, a prominent local historian and author, the park preserves the town’s natural beauty while celebrating its rich industrial and cultural past. Visitors can enjoy riverside paths, orchards, and meadows, all while exploring the park’s historical significance and artistic installations.

A Legacy from Harry Swan

Swan Park takes its name from Harry Percival Swan, born in Buncrana in 1879, a prominent local historian, author, and community figure. Harry Swan was a founding member of the County Donegal Historical Society and a passionate promoter of local heritage. His first book, The Book of Inishowen (1938), was followed by several others, including Twixt Foyle and Swilly and Romantic Inishowen. In 1965, his family bequeathed the land that became Swan Park to the people of Buncrana, ensuring that his commitment to community and history would live on in a place of natural beauty and public benefit. A bronze bust of Harry Swan stands in the park as a tribute to his contribution to the town and to the wider Inishowen region.

From Industrial Heartland to Public Park

The park area sits on land historically associated with Buncrana’s milling and industrial past. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, Swan’s Corn Mills and other mill buildings operated near the Crana River, processing flax, linen, cotton, and later flour, while Swan Mills’ associated Buncrana Electricity Supply Company provided hydro‑generated electricity to the town from 1905 until 1954 — making Buncrana one of the first towns in County Donegal to receive electric power.

Community and Cultural Heritage

In recent years Swan Park has been transformed through community‑focused regeneration. After suffering extensive flood damage in 2017, the park underwent a major renewal project supported by the Rural Regeneration Fund and Donegal County Council. The reopened park features improved accessibility, expanded parkland, seating areas, and public art installations. One notable feature is the “History Wall,” created by local sculptor John McCarron: a series of twelve relief panels that chronicle the park and surrounding area’s rich cultural and industrial heritage.

Swan Park also has a vibrant artistic tradition. In the 1990s, Artlink initiated its first public art project here — the Swan Park Ceramic Trail — blending nature, community engagement, and creativity. Recent efforts have revitalised this ceramic art trail, bringing new artwork to life with the involvement of local artists and community groups, celebrating the park’s habitats, history, and biodiversity.
