Overview

The Urris Lakes Loop Walk is a challenging and highly rewarding hike through some of the most remote and unspoilt countryside in the Inishowen Peninsula, Co. Donegal. This strenuous loop offers experienced walkers a true wilderness experience, combining rugged terrain, mountain views, and peaceful upland landscapes.

Starting at the atmospheric Leenan Strand, the trail quickly moves into quiet, remote countryside. Walkers follow a mix of bog road, ancient cart tracks, and open hillside terrain. Along the way, you’ll experience dramatic scenery and a strong sense of isolation in one of Donegal’s most beautiful natural areas.

The Urris Lakes Loop Walk is best suited to very fit and experienced walkers due to its steep climbs, rough ground, and exposed sections.

Trailhead & Parking at Urris Lakes Loop

The Urris Lakes Loop Walk begins at a small car park at Leenankeel, at the southern end of Leenan Strand.

This remote coastal location provides immediate access to one of Inishowen’s most scenic and rugged walking areas. The route is clearly marked but requires care due to uneven terrain and steep sections.
