The internationally renowned Donegal Camino returns from Sunday 30th – Monday 31st August 2026, once again beginning its journey in Inishowen before continuing across County Donegal.

In aid of Cancer Care West. All fundraising from the event supports its services, including the Cancer Care West Support Centre in Letterkenny. With your continued participation and generosity, the organisers aim to exceed previous fundraising targets and further support individuals and families affected by cancer across the region.

The first two days of the Camino showcase some of the most spectacular coastal and mountain landscapes in the Inishowen peninsula, combining guided walking, heritage stops, music and community hospitality.

DAY 1 – The Isle of Doagh, Inishowen

Sunday 30th August 2026

📍 Meet Point: Pollen Strand Beach & Car Park, Ballyliffin, Inishowen
⏰ Meet Time: 8.45am SHARP
🚶 Walk Start: 10am SHARP
📏 Distance: approx. 13km | 🕒 4–5 hours | Moderate

The opening day takes walkers on a stunning coastal loop around the historic Isle of Doagh, a peninsula within the greater Inishowen landscape.

The route begins and ends at Pollen Strand, Ballyliffin, offering sweeping Atlantic views and rich local heritage throughout the walk.

A key highlight is a visit to the renowned Doagh Famine Village, where walkers can explore traditional cottages and learn about the history of the area.

A light lunch will be provided on site, kindly hosted by Pat Doherty and family.

🎶 The day begins with live music from the Inishowen Collective of Musicians at the start point, marking the official opening of the 2026 Camino.

Important: Hiking boots, weatherproof clothing, water, sun cream and a positive spirit are essential.
Pollen Strand is tidal and not suitable for swimming.

DAY 2 – Slieve Sneacht

Monday 31st August 2026

📍 Meet Point: The North Pole Bar, Inishowen
⏰ Registration: 9.00am
🚶 Walk Start: 10.00am SHARP
📏 Distance: approx. 9km | 🕒 Strenuous

Day 2 takes on one of Inishowen’s most iconic mountains, Slieve Sneacht, meaning “Mountain of Snow”.

The route includes approximately 2km of soft bog terrain before a steady climb to 615m, rewarding walkers with panoramic views across:

• Lough Swilly
• Lough Foyle
• On clear days, views extending to Scotland

This mountain holds strong cultural and spiritual significance, including its connection to ancient Lughnasa pilgrimage traditions. Near the summit is Tobar na Súl, traditionally associated with healing.

A return coach transfer is provided to and from the start/finish point (no parking available at trailhead). Weather conditions may require an alternative route plan.

After the walk, participants transfer to Carrigart for the evening stopover.

Important: Hiking poles, layered waterproof clothing and a packed lunch are required.
