Amazing Grace and Lough Swilly

Ireland’s beautiful Lough Swilly is not only a stunning natural landmark but also the setting for a dramatic event that changed the life of John Newton, the man who would go on to write the world-famous hymn, “Amazing Grace.” In 1748, Newton, then a slave trader, was sailing towards England when his ship was caught in a violent storm on the Lough. Facing what seemed certain death, he found refuge on the shores of Lough Swilly and, believing that God had saved him, experienced a profound spiritual awakening that would alter the course of his life.

Following this transformative moment, Newton abandoned his life as a slave trader and devoted himself to religion. He eventually became a clergyman in the Church of England, dedicating his life to preaching and writing hymns. Among his many contributions, “Amazing Grace” stands out as one of the most enduring and beloved songs of all time, celebrated worldwide for its message of redemption, forgiveness, and hope.

Today, visitors to Buncrana can explore this remarkable story at Amazing Grace Park, located right next to the Go Visit Inishowen Tourist Office. A short stroll along the shore leads to the Amazing Grace Viewing Point, where the dramatic waters of Lough Swilly provide a striking backdrop to reflect on Newton’s extraordinary journey and the enduring power of faith and transformation.
